On January 8, 2023, a group of 4 members of Bower Hill Community Church hiked the Montour trail starting at Tandem Bicycle at Hendersonville. The temperature was just above freezing with thick cloud cover. But the trail was in excellent shape with no ice or mud. We started toward the National Tunnel crossing Morganza Rd. Shortly we encountered the outdoor art displays and then passed under Interstate 79. Ahead on the left was the newly paved spur trail that takes you to Southpoint. After a slight up hill, we passed the five primitive campsites at Kurnick. Next on the left was an old abandoned spur line with a bridge over the stream, that normally cannot be seen when the leaves are out. Finally, we arrived at National tunnel. During the winter the entrance is covered up with a small opening that has strips of plastic hanging down. The arrangement prevents ice build up inside the tunnel during the winter. At this point we retraced our steps back to the car.
