PASTORAL PONDERINGS
Often we speak of “our church.” It usually is with a sense of pride and ownership. We use it to identify its geographical location as well as those individuals in our fellowship. Do we ever ponder the enormity of the church to which we belong? If we limit our thinking to The Presbyterian Church USA we are part of a fellowship of over a million members. If we expand that to think of all protestants, we make up over 46% of the population of the United States.
Yet, as we approach World Wide Communion Sunday, we need to think in terms of the Christian Church. The language of the Apostles Creed refers to the “Catholic Church,” meaning the universal Christian Church. In the world our number is over 2.38 billion and expected to reach over 3.3 billion by the end of next year. On the first Sunday of October, as you receive the bread and juice, ponder the potential strength of the faith to which you belong. Yes, the church and the faith are alive!
